Service Description

Every August 17th, the picturesque village of Portovenere illuminates in celebration of the White Madonna Festival (Festa della Madonna Bianca), a cherished tradition blending history, faith, and mesmerizing beauty. As dusk falls, over 2,000 torches and candles light up the village, including the iconic Church of San Pietro perched on the rocky promontory, creating a breathtaking spectacle reflected in the serene waters of the Ligurian Sea. A Glimpse into History The festival commemorates a miraculous event from 1399. According to legend, during a time of plague and hardship, a faded image of the Virgin Mary in a local's home suddenly regained its colors, symbolizing hope and renewal for the villagers. This revered image now resides in the Church of San Lorenzo and is central to the annual celebrations. Festival Highlights Torchlit Procession: Witness the solemn procession as the sacred icon is carried through the flower-adorned streets, accompanied by heartfelt prayers and traditional music. Illuminated Village: Experience the magical ambiance as Portovenere glows under thousands of lights, transforming the village into a luminous masterpiece. Sea of Lights: Join the flotilla of boats gathering offshore, each adorned with lanterns, contributing to the enchanting seascape. Join the Celebration Whether you're drawn by spiritual devotion or the allure of cultural festivities, the White Madonna Festival offers an unforgettable experience. Be part of a tradition where history and community spirit shine brightly against the backdrop of Portovenere's stunning coastal scenery.
